A FAMILY BUSINESS WITH OVER 90 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Scotton Garage is an independent, family run garage and DVSA verified MOT testing centre based in Lingerfield, about two miles from the centre of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

​

Founded by Simon York in 1997 we have over 90 years of combined experience in the motor trade. Following in Simon's footsteps, the garage is now run by Toby York, Simon's eldest son. Richard De Vito, who started at Scotton Garage in 2002 as an apprentice mechanic, has worked his way up and is now the head mechanic and workshop controller. In true family style, Simon's wife, Anita, owns and runs Scotton Motorhome Hire from their site at Ferrensby, just up the road. Toby runs Scotton Classic Car Sales and Scotton Motorcycles too.

Simon began his motor trade career while still serving as an Aircraft Engineer in the RAF. He took the plunge and set up on his own in 1997 and left the RAF after years of working on Tornados and Nimrods. The early years mainly consisted of Ford Capri's, MG Midgets and Land Rovers. He has had a very successful self built career in both vehicle repairs and sales and now owns multiple businesses, across multiple sites. His eye for having fun and adventure is reflected clearly on the people that have grown up and worked with him. (Most of which share his slightly warped sense of military humour!) 

Semi-retirement has enabled him to take more time off, to enjoy with his wife, Anita and his whippet, Bertie. All of whom are usually found in prestige, classic cars, motorhomes, boats or walking around the British Isles.

Toby runs the business day to day. He has learnt every aspect of the trade and has grown up alongside the business and has been a part of the expansion and development from a very young age. From valeting and detailing to vehicle purchasing and vehicle sales with everything in-between, Toby has seen and done it all. Toby is rarely found without his rescue dog, Daisy, by his side (and if not by his side, she's usually found asleep in the office chair!) Scotton garage customers should feel greatly honoured if she wakes up to say hello! 

Driving, motorbike riding, hiking, camping, boating or flying Toby loves it all and will enjoy anything he can get a chance with. Too many rugby injuries spurred a new found love for golf which has become his newest passion, spending most of his spare time on the course (although we are fairly convinced he's better and more at home at the 19th hole than the previous 18!)

Richard is our head mechanic with over 20 years experience, all of which have been spent at Scotton Garage. He is also an MOT tester. There is little left in the world that Richard hasn't worked on before, or repaired previously. A family man, keen graphic designer and artist, he enjoys time away and walks with the family and their dog, Hamley. 

​

Craig is our primary MOT tester. He has multiple years experience as a Porsche specialist. He left working on Porsches and swapped into the tool industry, gaining a few years experience with Snap On Tools before coming back to the spanners at Scotton Garage. Craig is an avid motorbike rider and is usually found somewhere around the Dales or Lake District on his R1200 GS Adventure when he's not in Scotton Garage uniform.

Ash has joined the team along with his Blue Merle Borer Collie, Loki. Ash also has multiple years experience working on Porsche's but as a self proclaimed Petrol Head, he has worked on and owned all sorts, from 106's to Defenders and most things in between. Most notably he has recently carried out a full nut and bolt restoration on his own Honda Integra Type R which he plans to take to The Nürburgring later in the year.

Sy started life at Scotton Garage in 2010 as an apprentice mechanic. He completed his training qualifications and stayed at Scotton Garage until 2013 before going onto work at another Harrogate based garage and vehicle sales business. Sy is an avid gamer, who created multiple Youtube channels with over 100,000 subscribers (yes he has the sought after Youtube plaque to prove it!). He re-joined Scotton Garage primarily as a valeter, in 2020 with the look to re-newing his knowledge and skills on the tools. Swapping from Showroom to Workshop, he has showed his determination and dedication and has now gained his DVSA approved MOT testing qualification and carries out MOT tests, general repairs and servicing. Sy is our tyre Guru with years of specialist experience.

Dave is the most recent member to join the Scotton Garage team. Dave is backed by a wealth of experience in the motor trade (49 years to be exact, but he says he has given up counting!) a long list of friends and contacts in every corner of the motor trade world gives him unrivalled knowledge, experience and expertise. He served his early years on the spanners, working on, diagnosing and tuning carburettors on Lotus' and other high end performance cars for a West Yorkshire based tuning company. He has worked in countless main dealers across Yorkshire, several specialists (most recently a Porsche specialist) and a few independents where he has run workshops and teams across most brands and manufacturers. What Dave and his contacts don't know, isn't worth knowing. If he isn't working or researching at home he can usually be found on his self built motor propelled push bike or finishing on the Nidd.

WE MAINTAIN AND REPAIR ALL MAKES AND MODELS

We maintain and repair private and trade vehicles of all makes, models, ages and types - so long as they can fit in our workshop! We undertake works on scooters, quads and classics as well as standard cars and vans.

​

We are one of the largest and busiest MOT testing stations in the Harrogate and Knaresborough area, undertaking MOT testing for other local garages, businesses and dealerships. As a Class 4 MOT testing station we are licensed to perform MOT tests on cars and vans up to three tonnes in weight. Due to the volumes we can handle in a testing station of this size, you'll find our prices very competitive.

COURTESY CAR OR VEHICLE COLLECTION/DELIVERY SERVICE

We offer a free of charge, local door-to-door collection and delivery service or alternatively we can provide you with a courtesy car whilst your vehicle is in the workshop. Please note that courtesy car bookings are allocated on a first come, first served basis at a charge of £10 + VAT per day to cover maintenance, insurance, running costs etc.

Scotton Garage is also known for MGB restoration work so if you're an MGB enthusiast you may wish to peruse the showroom when you visit. Scotton Classic Cars has a wide selection and variety of MGB's in stock with one of the largest collections of B's, in the UK and at one point had the largest stock in Europe. We often have classic cars through the workshop and we are highly regarded in this specialised area. We can offer anything from light servicing, diagnostics, maintenance and repairs to full overhauls and restorations.
